Passerella arborea (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) was previously placed in the genus Spizella following AOU (1998 & supplements); Sibley & Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population is estimated to number 26 million mature individuals (Partners in Flight 2019).
Trend justification: The species has been undergoing a large, significant decline at an average rate of 1.8% per year between 1970 and 2014 (Partners in Flight 2019). Trends vary locally however, with populations in the south of the range declining and populations in the north increasing (Meehan et al. 2018).
