Site description (2000 baseline)
A shallow saline lake (max. 1,500 ha) lying in a closed basin (çalýkdüzü) 75 km south of Ankara. It is fed by small streams and largely dries up during summer. Wet grazing-marshes and extensive Typha beds are found at the southern and northern ends of the lake. Arable cultivation takes place in the higher, drier areas.

Key biodiversity
The site supports significant numbers of breeding Charadrius leschenaultii. Large numbers of wildfowl winter, whilst Phoenicopterus ruber, Oxyura leucocephala and Himantopus himantopus occur principally during the post-breeding season.
