Site location and context
Zoigê marshes have a total area of nearly 1,000,000 ha and extend from northern Sichuan into southern Gansu (where they are included in the two IBAs, Ganligahai-Zecha Nature Reserve [CN165] and Huang He Shouqu Nature Reserve [CN166]). This IBA is located in the west of Zoigê County. It is a mosaic of small lakes, ponds, freshwater marshes, ox-bow lakes and channels, with extensive areas of marshland plants.
Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Felis manul, Equus kiang, Felis lynx, Lutra lutra, Moschus sifanicus, Pantholops hodgsoni and Pseudois nayaur.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
The IBA overlaps with Zoigê–Qammê (Ruo’ergai-Xiaman) Nature Reserve (166,571 ha), which was established in 1994 and is now a national nature reserve, Manzetang Nature Reserve (165,874 ha), which was established at the provincial level in 2001, and Riganqiao Nature Reserve (107,536 ha), which was established at the county level in 2000.
