Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Located on the southern slopes of the central Himalayas, at the southern tip of Nyalam County, with Nepal to the south. The IBA has high mountains and deep valleys. The dense vegetation shows prominent vertical zonation, with broadleaf evergreen forest (1,600-2,500 m), coniferous-broadleaf mixed forest (2,500-3,100 m), alpine coniferous forest (3,100-4,000 m) and alpine scrub (4,000-4,500 m).

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Presbytis entellus (a primate endemic to the Himalayas), Ursus arctos, Selenarctos thibetanus, Ailurus fulgens, Moschus chrysogaster and Capricornis sumatraensis.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
The IBA includes Zham Nature Reserve (6,852 ha), which was established in 1985. Qomolangma Feng National Nature Reserve (3,300,000 ha), which partially overlaps with the IBA, was first established in 1988 and fully established in 1993.
