Zarafshan State Nature Reserve

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Egyptian Nightjar Caprimulgus aegyptius LC breeding (2007) 1 birds A3
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax LC breeding (1976–2006) 50–1,000 birds A4i
Pallid Scops-owl Otus brucei LC breeding (2006–2007) 20 birds A3
Greater Spotted Eagle Clanga clanga VU passage (2004) 15 birds A1
European Roller Coracias garrulus LC breeding (2002–2007) 60 birds A1
White-winged Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucopterus LC resident (2002–2007) 10 pairs A3
Great Tit Parus major LC resident (2002–2009) 20–27 pairs A3
Red-headed Bunting Emberiza bruniceps LC breeding (2007) 1 birds A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2008) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2008 not assessed high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset medium

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Natural system modifications happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Climate change and severe weather likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Pollution happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Energy production and mining happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) low
Transportation and service corridors happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
