Site description (2009 baseline):
Site location and context
The IBA is in the central part of Rongshui County. It is an elongated area with Yuanbao Shan mountain (2,081 m) in the east and Motian Ling (1,938 m) in the west. The topography is hilly, with deep river valleys. There are some areas of well-preserved natural forest. There are patches of coniferous forest (less than 5%), mainly Tsuga spp. and Abies spp. Areas above 1,700 m are dominated by scrub, short woodland and grassland.
Non-bird biodiversity: Important plants include Abies yuanbaoshanensis and Taxus chinensis. Animals include Andrias davidianus, Manis pentadactyla, Moschus berezovskii and Macaca assamensis.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Partially protected in the provincial-level Yuanbao Shan Nature Reserve (4,159 ha), which was established in 1982 to protect Abies yuanbaoshanensis and the forested watershed.
