Site description (2004 baseline):

Yardi-Rabe Supse Wildlife Sanctuary is virtually an unknown protected area in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh in the Lesser Himalaya. Although the Sanctuary has been notified, the rights of the community have not yet been settled fully and there may be some alteration in area also at the time of finalisation. This is basically a data deficient site but extremely important because it has some globally threatened avian species. The area is entirely montane with hills and deep gorges. The vegetation ranges from subtropical to temperate forests. A large part of this IBA is remote and inaccessible. (A. U. Choudhury pers. comm. 2003).

AVIFAUNA: The avain diversity of this IBA is virtually unknown, except for the threatened Rufous-necked Hornbill Aceros nipalensis of which a sizeable population is believed to exist. Unconfirmed reports of Red-breasted Hill-Partridge Arborophila mandellii have also been received.

OTHER KEY FAUNA: The Asiatic Black Bear Ursus thibetanus was reported to be common. Other mammals are Tiger Panthera tigris, Clouded Leopard Neofelis nebulosa, Assamese Macaque Macaca assamensis and Capped Langur Trachypithecus pileata (A. U. Choudhury pers. comm. 2003).

MAIN THREATS: Hunting; Felling of trees.

As this is a remote inaccessible area, poaching and felling of trees is insignificant. The main issue now is finalisation of the sanctuary by government and clarification on the rights of the local community.
