FSM016
Yap Island

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2012 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
White-throated Ground Dove Pampusana xanthonura NT resident (-) present A1, A2
Micronesian Myzomela Myzomela rubratra LC resident (-) present A2
Rufous Fantail Rhipidura rufifrons LC resident (-) present A2
Yap Monarch Metabolus godeffroyi NT resident (-) present A1, A2
Yap Olive White-eye Zosterops oleagineus NT resident (-) present A1, A2
Yap Plain White-eye Zosterops hypolais NT resident (-) present A1, A2
Micronesian Starling Aplonis opaca LC resident (-) present A2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2012. The most recent assessment (2012) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2012 very poor medium very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
White-tailed Tropicbird Phaethon lepturus 12 / 4 (birds) 100 good
White-throated Ground Dove Pampusana xanthonura 0 / 2 (birds) 0 not assessed
Brown Noddy Anous stolidus 80 / 15 (birds) 100 good
Black Noddy Anous minutus 0 / 3 (birds) 0 not assessed
Gygis alba 17,013 / 17,013 (birds) 100 not assessed
Micronesian Myzomela Myzomela rubratra 240 / 1,098 (birds) 22 very poor
Edolisoma tenuirostre 0 / 3 (birds) 0 very poor
Rhipidura rufifrons 52 / 250 (birds) 21 very poor
Yap Monarch Metabolus godeffroyi 160 / 306 (birds) 53 poor
Yap Olive White-eye Zosterops oleagineus 32 / 232 (birds) 14 very poor
Yap Plain White-eye Zosterops hypolais 418 / 1,027 (birds) 41 poor
Micronesian Starling Aplonis opaca 124 / 471 (birds) 27 very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Climate change and severe weather likely in long term (>4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now whole of population/area (>90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Pollution happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Some limited conservation initiatives are in place very low
