Site location and context
Xianghai Nature Reserve is located at the western tip of the Songnen Plain, with Inner Mongolia to the west. The reserve has five core areas with a total area of 28,000 ha, which are zoned according to the distribution of the fauna and flora. There are many lowlands and lakes in the area, which are important breeding and staging sites for local and migratory birds, and 220 bird species have been recorded in the IBA.
Non-bird biodiversity: Mammals include Canis lupus, Vulpes vulpes, Mustela sibirica, Nyctereutes procyonoides, Meles meles and Lepus capensis.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1981, upgraded to a national nature reserve in 1986, and designated in 1992 as a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ (or Ramsar site) under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. WWF designated the reserve as an ‘A-class nature reserve’ in 1992.
