Site description (2009 baseline)
Xianghai Nature Reserve is located at the western tip of the Songnen Plain, with Inner Mongolia to the west. The reserve has five core areas with a total area of 28,000 ha, which are zoned according to the distribution of the fauna and flora. There are many lowlands and lakes in the area, which are important breeding and staging sites for local and migratory birds, and 220 bird species have been recorded in the IBA.
Key biodiversity
Non-bird biodiversity: Mammals include Canis lupus, Vulpes vulpes, Mustela sibirica, Nyctereutes procyonoides, Meles meles and Lepus capensis.
