Site description (2009 baseline)
Located on the borders of Xinglong, Chengde and Luanping counties in Hebei Province and Miyun County in Beijing. Wuling Shan is the highest peak in the Yanshan mountains, and it has a temperate monsoon mountain climate. It has forest cover of c.93%, and is one of the richest plant resources in North China that has been described as a natural botanic garden and natural gene bank. It was named as a National Youth Scientific Education Base in 2002 and a National Forestry Popular Science Base in 2004.
Key biodiversity
Non-bird biodiversity: 1,870 species of higher plants are recorded including 10 listed in the Chinese Red Data Book of Plants. 173 wild animal species have been recorded including Panthera pardus. Historically this is the northernmost locality of Macaca mulatta (now extinct).
