Wuda Lianchi Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Located in Wuda Lianchi City. The IBA is on the plain at the western edge of the Xiao Hinggan Ling mountains. Ancient volcanic activities formed five linked lakes (“Lianchi”), with a total area of 1,800 ha. There is agricultural land around the lakes, and woodland in the riverine lowlands.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Lutra lutra, Cervus elaphus and Nyctereutes procyonoides.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1980 for the protection of the volcanic landscape and water sources, and upgraded to a national nature reserve in 1996. Wuda Lianchi was designated in 2003 as a ‘Biosphere Reserve’ under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
