Site description (2012 baseline):
Site location and context
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Venezuela Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Atlantic, Western Central FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 20103 km2 and is 134 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 37 to 3781 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 1.86 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 27.85 and 27.95 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.15 and 0.27 mg/m3.
2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Refugio de Fauna Silvestre Isla de Aves include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Brown Noddy (LC) 0-24000 individuals and Sooty Tern (LC).
