Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A shallow freshwater area, with meadows grazed by cattle, and large expanses of reedbed.



Key biodiversity
This is an important staging area for Cygnus cygnus and C. columbianus. In total nearly 20,000 waterbirds overwinter or stage at this site. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Circus aeruginosus, Porzana porzana, Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea, S. albifrons and Chlidonias niger.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The entire area is protected and public access is prohibited with the exception of a few trails and roads. Introduced American mink Mustela vison prey on breeding birds.



Protected areas
National Partial International High3,850 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Vejlerne and Løgstør Bredning, 45,280 ha). 3,850 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Vestlige Vejler; Arup Holme and Hovsør Røn (3,850 ha).
