Site description (2000 baseline)
A shallow freshwater area, with meadows grazed by cattle, and large expanses of reedbed.

Key biodiversity
This is an important staging area for Cygnus cygnus and C. columbianus. In total nearly 20,000 waterbirds overwinter or stage at this site. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Circus aeruginosus, Porzana porzana, Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea, S. albifrons and Chlidonias niger.
