SY020
Wadi al-Qarn - Burqush

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 1994 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus LC non-breeding (1993) 9–10 birds B2
Sombre Tit Poecile lugubris LC resident (1993) present A3
Upcher's Warbler Hippolais languida LC breeding (1993) present A3
Menetries's Warbler Curruca mystacea LC breeding (1993) present A3, B3
White-throated Robin Irania gutturalis LC breeding (1993) frequent A3
Finsch's Wheatear Oenanthe finschii LC breeding (1993) present A3
Pale Sparrow Carpospiza brachydactyla LC breeding (1993) present A3
Syrian Serin Serinus syriacus VU breeding (1993) frequent A1, A2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 1994. The most recent assessment (2014) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2014 not assessed very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset unknown

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Transportation and service corridors happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Grassland major (>10)
Shrubland major (>10)
Rocky areas (eg. inland cliffs, mountain peaks) minor (<10)
Wetlands (inland) minor (<10)

Land use

Land use % of IBA
rangeland/pastureland major (>10)
tourism/recreation minor (<10)
hunting minor (<10)
