Site description (1994 baseline)
A small irrigation storage reservoir on the Gorgan river, c.50 km north-north-east of Gorgan and 35 km west of Gonbad-e Qaboos, in a region of steppe and arable land. The water level fluctuates widely, and extensive mudflats can be exposed, but in most places the banks shelve steeply and there is little emergent vegetation.

Key biodiversity
See box for key species. A wintering area for ducks and grebes, notably Netta rufina (up to 340 birds) and Mergellus albellus, and a staging area for shorebirds. Sterna albifrons breeds.
