Vesser valley Biosphere Reserve


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A wooded area on the southern slopes of the Thüringer Wald mountains with the valleys of the River Vesser and its tributaries. Rich forests (Fagus, Pinus, Abies) and riverine vegetation create a mosaic of diverse habitats.



Key biodiversity
There are 92 breeding species. The site is important for woodland species, particularly hole-nesting birds.

National High International High40 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Beerbergmoor NSG, 40 ha). 21 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Erbskopf NSG, 21 ha). 20 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Harzgrund NSG, 20 ha). 420 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Marktal und Morast NSG, 420 ha). 182 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Oberlauf der Gabeltaler NSG, 182 ha). 40 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Schneekopf-moor am Teufelskreis NSG, 48 ha). 55 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Seiffertsburg NSG, 55 ha). 7,464 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Vessertal, 10,875 ha). 7,464 ha of IBA covered by Nature Park (Thüringer Wald/Westliches Schiefergebirge NP, 200,000 ha). IBA overlaps with Biosphere Reserve and Special Protection Area.
