Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A complex of four adjacent aapa mires, four lakes and 15 old coniferous boreal woodlands located just south of the lower course of the Simo river. The mires belong to the Pohjanmaa aapa mires, being characterized by muddy, wet bogs with low, grassy ridges between them.
An important area for boreal avifauna.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The area is a candidate SAC.
National High
International High2,386 ha of IBA covered by Peatland Reserve (Veittiaapa, 2,386 ha). 3,037 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Veittiaapa).
