IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus LC winter (2003–2006) 66–634 birds B1i
Mallard Anas platyrhynchos LC winter (2003–2006) 68,240–80,000 birds A4i, B1i
Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus LC breeding (2004–2006) 1,050 pairs A4i, B1i, B2
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax LC breeding (2006) 200 pairs B2
Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides LC breeding (2004–2006) 50–55 pairs B2
Little Egret Egretta garzetta LC breeding (2006) 280–300 pairs B1i

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2006) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2006 moderate high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Artificial/Terrestrial moderate (70–90%) good (>90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Biological resource use happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place very low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Artificial/Terrestrial 79 Arable land; Other urban and industrial areas
