PF005
Vallées Maruapo, Papehue, Hopuetamai et Orofero This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2007 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Grey-green Fruit-dove Ptilinopus purpuratus LC resident (-) common A2
Polynesian Swiftlet Aerodramus leucophaeus LC resident (-) min 100 birds A1, A2
Tahiti Kingfisher Todiramphus veneratus NT resident (-) common A2
Tahiti Monarch Pomarea nigra CR resident (2006) 30–40 birds A1, A2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2007. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 very poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Tahiti Monarch Pomarea nigra 53 / 250 (birds) 22 very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) very high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Forest 50 Lowland evergreen rain forest (tropical)
Introduced vegetation 50 Introduced/exotic vegetation

Land use

Land use % of IBA
water management 95
agriculture minor (<10)
fisheries/aquaculture minor (<10)
not utilised -
