Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
An archipelagic area in the north-east Gulf of Bothnia. The area consists of three sub-areas: Torsö island in the outer archipelago, with a forested interior and sandy, stony or rocky shores; Stubben, a group of largish offshore islands with mainly stony shores; and Storsand island, a natural area of sand-dunes with sparse vegetation.
An important area for island-breeding birds.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
National Low
International High599 ha of IBA covered by Private Protection Area (Lotan, 309 ha; Torsö, 290 ha). 7,707 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Uudenkaarlepyyn saaristo).
