Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A shallow sea area with shoals, banks and islands surrounded by saltmarsh and agricultural land.
Population data are incomplete but numbers of wintering birds appear to be lower than in 1983 when the site was designated as a Special Protection Area. It is possible that very high numbers only occur in harsh winters, when several more species meet the A4i criterion, and the total number of waterbirds exceeds 20,000 individuals.
Sterna hirundo and
Sterna paradisaea, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.
National None
International High8,160 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Ulvsund and Grønsund, 8,160 ha).
