Site description (2009 baseline)
Located on the southern slopes of the Altay Mountains, north of the Junggar Basin, 100 km south-west of Altay City and 370 km north of Urumqi. Ulungur Hu has an area of 739 km2 and is the second largest lake in Xinjiang, and it is linked to Jili Hu which has an area of 172 km2. The extensive reedbeds and marshes in the IBA are important breeding and staging areas for birds.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Vulpes vulpes and Gazella subgutturosa.
