Site location and context
Located in the eastern part of Houtao Plain. Ulansuhai is the second largest lake in Inner Mongolia, extending 35-40 km from north to south and 5-10 km from east to west, with more than 290 km2 of open water. Emergent reeds and bulrushes cover 50% of the lake area, and these water plants separate the lake surface into several different sections. Ulansuhai supports one of the most important fisheries in Inner Mongolia.

Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1998.
