Tzena and Pinovo mountains


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
Mounts Tzena and Pinovo form the central part of the Aridaia mountain range. The vegetation comprises extensive broadleaved forests and alpine and subalpine grassland. The site lies adjacent to site 009 in the FYR Macedonia.



Key biodiversity
This is an important breeding and foraging site for raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aquila heliaca (non-breeding).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from hunting, the afforestation of abandoned cultivation and grassland with plantations of Robinia pseudacacia, and intensified forest management. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National Partial International High5,000 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Pinovo-Tzena/Notias, 5,199 ha). 5,000 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Ori Tzena, 12,579 ha).
