Tsamanta, Filiata, Farmakovouni and Megali Rachi mountains


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A mountainous area on the border with Albania. At higher altitudes there are extensive areas of alpine pasture and some conifer forests. Lower down, deciduous forest and scrub dominates. Human activities include stock-raising, hunting, and forestry.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aquila heliaca.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from shooting, the use of poisoned baits, and road construction. In 1997 HOS carried out a survey of Aquila heliaca.



Protected areas
National Low International None1,350 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Panagia-Kourouza-Makralexi/Lavdani-Ag. Marina Pogo, 1,350 ha).
