Site description (2000 baseline)
The area encompasses a high diversity of habitats including extensive areas of raised bog (Torronsuo National Park is a near-wilderness area), a large eutrophic lake (Talpianjärvi) which is mostly covered by Salix- and Carex-dominated marshes due to falling water-levels, and surrounding arable farmlands.

Key biodiversity
The area provides important breeding habitats for both farmland and peatland birds, including Gavia stellata (5 pairs) and Perdix perdix (35-45 pairs). Most significant are the high numbers of staging Anser fabalis fabalis and Grus grus (in autumn).
