Torna-Shoina watershed

Site description (2001 baseline):

Site location and context
The area is located about 420 km southeast of Arkhangelsk, on the eastern coast of the Kanin Peninsula, and covers the watersheds of the Torna and Shoina rivers, with the Shoina river forming the southern boundary of the site.

Key biodiversity
The site is important for migrating waders in spring and autumn. Autumn migration is poorly studied. Many flocks congregate in different parts of the site and total 1000 moulting birds (Bucephala clangula, Aythya marila, Melanita nigra, Melanita fusca).

Habitat and land use
The area consists of mud flats, coastal marshes, dunes and estuaries. A 2-5 m terrace with tundra vegetation lies adjacent to the low and flat plain.Legally the area is owned by the reindeer state farm; no habitat-damage from the grazing is apparent.

Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Area has no protection status, but is included on the Shadow List of Wetlands of International Importance.
