Tongoa - Laika

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2014 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Vanuatu Scrubfowl Megapodius layardi LC breeding (2014) 100–150 nests A1, A2
Red-bellied Fruit-dove Ptilinopus greyi LC resident (2014) present A2
Wedge-tailed Shearwater Ardenna pacifica LC breeding (2014) 10,000-19,999 pairs A4ii
Grey-eared Honeyeater Lichmera incana LC resident (2014) present A2
Cardinal Myzomela Myzomela cardinalis LC resident (2014) present A2
Melanesian Flycatcher Myiagra caledonica LC resident (2014) present A2
Vanuatu White-eye Zosterops flavifrons LC resident (2014) present A2
Red-headed Parrotfinch Erythrura cyaneovirens LC resident (2014) < 50 A1, A2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2014. The most recent assessment (2021) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2021 moderate medium low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest - - moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Climate change and severe weather likely in long term (>4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now whole of population/area (>90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Forest 92 Rainforest & vine thickets

Land ownership
The community at Kurumabe own much of the land on North Tongoa and the island of Laika.
