Tinian Island

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2007 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Micronesian Scrubfowl Megapodius laperouse NT resident (-) present A1, A2
White-throated Ground Dove Pampusana xanthonura NT resident (1982) 250-999 birds A1, A2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2007. The most recent assessment (2012) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2012 poor high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
White-throated Ground Dove Pampusana xanthonura 21 / 5 (birds) 100 good
Mariana Fruit-dove Ptilinopus roseicapilla 33 / 41 (birds) 81 moderate
Micronesian Myzomela Myzomela rubratra 47 / 88 (birds) 54 poor
Rhipidura rufifrons 1,001 / 654 (birds) 100 good
Tinian Monarch Metabolus takatsukasae 484 / 698 (birds) 70 moderate
Zosterops conspicillatus 3,274 / 3,508 (birds) 94 good
Micronesian Starling Aplonis opaca 350 / 139 (birds) 100 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Residential and commercial development happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place very low
