Tianmu Shan

Site location and context
Tianmu Shan is located in Lin’an City, 94 km from Hangzhou City. At 1,507 m, Xianrending is the highest peak in the IBA and one of the highest mountains in western Zhejiang.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Cercidiphyllum japonicum and Ginkgo biloba. Animals include Panthera pardus, Neofelis nebulosa, Capricornis sumatraensis and Cervus nippon.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as as provincial-level nature reserve in 1956, when logging was forbidden, and upgraded to Tianmu Shan National Nature Reserve (4,284 ha) in 1986, which includes the entire IBA. Tianmu Shan was designated in 1996 as a ‘Biosphere Reserve’ under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
