Tianma Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Located in the mountains of Jinzhai County, where Anhui borders Hubei and Hunan provinces. Forest cover is 75.6%, a forest area of 21,327.3 ha. The vegetation has prominent vertical zonation, and mainly comprises northern subtropical evergreen forest and broadleaf deciduous mixed forest. In flat areas the trees are mainly beeches.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Pinus dabeshanensis. Nationally protected animals include Andrias davidianus, Panthera pardus, Lutra lutra, Manis pentadactyla and Rana rugulosa.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
The provincial-level Tiantangzhai Nature Reserve was established in 1990 and the provincial-level Mazongling Nature Reserve in 1982. These were combined to form Tianma National Nature Reserve (28,914 ha) in 1998.
