MY003
Teluk Air Tawar-Kuala Muda coast This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus NT non-breeding 1988-1989 present A1
Chinese Pond Heron Ardeola bacchus LC winter 2000 900-1,200 individuals A4i
Spotted Greenshank Tringa guttifer EN winter 2001-2005 8-31 individuals A1

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2004) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2018) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2018 favourable very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Reference Actual Units % remaining Result
Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus 1 0 individuals 0 very unfavourable
Chinese Pond Heron Ardeola bacchus 900 0 individuals 0 very unfavourable
Spotted Greenshank Tringa guttifer 28 10 individuals 36 very unfavourable

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Intertidal good (> 90%) good (> 90%) favourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now whole area/population (>90%) very rapid to severe deterioration very high
Pollution happening now some of area/population (10-49%) moderate to rapid deterioration high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Little/none of site covered (<10%) No management plan exists but the management planning process has begun Substantive conservation measures are being implemented but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
