MY003
Teluk Air Tawar-Kuala Muda coast This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus NT non-breeding (1988–1989) present A1
Chinese Pond Heron Ardeola bacchus LC winter (2000) 900–1,200 birds A4i
Spotted Greenshank Tringa guttifer EN winter (2001–2005) 8–31 birds A1

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2018) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2018 good very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus 0 / 1 (birds) 0 very poor
Chinese Pond Heron Ardeola bacchus 0 / 900 (birds) 0 very poor
Spotted Greenshank Tringa guttifer 10 / 28 (birds) 36 very poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Intertidal good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Pollution happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Forest major (>10) Mangrove forest (tropical)
Marine Intertidal major (>10)
Artificial/Terrestrial -
