Site summary
This segmented mountainous area consists of three geographic units (Západné Tatry, Vysoké Tatry, and Belianske Tatry). Spruce forests cover two thirds of the area. The sub-alpine vegetation consists mainly of pine, swiss pine and dwarf pine. The non-forested areas are comprised of mountain meadows, rock and grassland habitats. The area is used mainly for tourism and recreation. Some areas are used for forestry. The whole area is used for hunting. Extensive agriculture is practised only in the sub-mountainous areas. It is an important nesting site for forest birds, birds of prey and forest owls. Extensive sub-mountain meadows support birds of prey. Threats include forestry and unregulated tourism. The site is proposed as an SPA.
