Taohongling Sika Deer Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Taohongling Sika Deer Nature Reserve is located in the central part of Pengze County, and has a core area of 2,667 ha. There are no human residents in the nature reserve, and outside the reserve boundary there are mainly lowland agricultural lands. The elevation increases inside the reserve boundary to 300-500 m, with the highest point at 536.6 m. There are valleys with small streams and three reservoirs at the edge of the reserve.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected animals include Panthera pardus, Neofelis nebulosa, Cervus nippon, Manis pentadactyla, Viverricula indica and Viverra zibetha.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve (4,500 ha) in 1981, and upgraded to a national nature reserve (12,500 ha) in 2001.
