GM005
Tanji River (Karinti) Bird Reserve

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2022 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Audouin's Gull Larus audouinii VU winter (2022) 80 birds A1
Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia LC non-breeding (2022) 234 birds B3a

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2022. The most recent assessment (2022) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2022 very poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Ruddy Turnstone Arenaria interpres 17 / 523 (birds) 4 very poor
Slender-billed Gull Larus genei 33 / 200 (birds) 17 very poor
Audouin's Gull Larus audouinii 80 / 404 (birds) 20 very poor
Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus 309 / 6,500 (birds) 5 very poor
Little Tern Sternula albifrons 99 / 1,500 (birds) 7 very poor
Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia 234 / 2,100 (birds) 12 very poor
Sandwich Tern Thalasseus sandvicensis 25 / 2,000 (birds) 2 very poor
Royal Tern Thalasseus maximus 141 / 5,100 (birds) 3 very poor
A4iii Species group - waterbirds 938 / 20,000 (birds) 5 very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Biological resource use happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
