Tammisaari and Inkoo western archipelago

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2015 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis VU passage (2007–2014) 8,150–32,000 birds B1i
Common Eider Somateria mollissima NT passage (2000–2014) 5,809–18,000 birds B1i
Mew Gull Larus canus LC breeding (1994) 800–1,000 pairs B2
Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus LC breeding (1994) 130–160 pairs B3
Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia LC breeding (1994) 115 pairs A4i, B1i, B2, C2, C6
Black Guillemot Cepphus grylle LC breeding (1994) 120 pairs B2
White-tailed Sea-eagle Haliaeetus albicilla LC winter (1994) 20–30 birds A1, C1

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2015. The most recent assessment (2010) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2010 poor medium medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus 70 / 130 (pairs) 54 not assessed
Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia 170 / 170 (pairs) 100 good
Black Guillemot Cepphus grylle 65 / 120 (pairs) 55 poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
