Site description (2000 baseline)
A large wilderness of old-growth boreal forest and bog on the boundary of the North Savo and Kainuu provinces. A substantial amount of the forest is very old and in a natural state, and includes a considerable number of both standing and fallen dead trees. Some of the younger forests were formerly under management. Small raised bogs with scattered trees (mostly Pinus sylvestris) lie between the larger areas of forests. Streams and ponds traverse the area.

Key biodiversity
Breeding birds include 10 out of the 15 species in Europe that are restricted to the boreal biome (when breeding).
