Site description (1999 baseline):

Site location and context
Located around 65 km south of Surabaya. Gunung Arjuno (Mount Arjuno), one of the highest mountain in Java, is located inside this area.



Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Trachypithecus auratus (Nijman 1997).



Habitat and land use
Montain rainforest including fine examples of cemara forest (Casuarina junghuhnia). Other forest ecosystems include Festuca grassland and alpine vegetation over 3000 m (MacKinnon et.al.1982)



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Wildlife hunting, burning forest, sulphur exploitation and cutting forest by sulphur collectors (Directorate General of Tourism without year, MacKinnon et.al.1982)



Protected areas
Soerjo is declared as a Grand Forest Park (25000 ha) based on Keppres No.29/1992 on 20 June 1992 which include Arjuno Lalijiwo Nature Reserve (4960 ha), declared based on SK Menteri Pertanian No.250/Kpts/Um/5/72 on 25 May 1972 (Anon 1997, Anon 1998).
