Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
One of the most important areas of boreal forest in the Pohjanmaa region. A 25-km chain of boreal forests lies at the core of the site, with additional forests extending eastwards. The landscape is hilly, with one peak reaching a height of 431 m. The forests are dominated by
Picea, but deciduous forests cover the lower parts of the hills.
An important breeding area for boreal avifauna including
Picoides tridactylus and also
Tetrao urogallus (500-1,000 pairs),
Tarsiger cyanurus (5-15 males),
Perisoreus infaustus (100-200 pairs),
Parus cinctus (50-100 pairs) and
Pinicola enucleator (100-200 pairs).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The area is a candidate SAC.

International High5,720 ha of IBA covered by Specific Protection Area (Jaaskamonvaara, 5,755 ha). 46 ha of IBA covered by Protected Area on Private Land (Latvakouva, 46 ha). 31,395 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Syöte).
