Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A shallow archipelagic area of sea with shoals and many, generally uninhabited islands, with saltmarsh, reedbeds and small lakes. There is scattered habitation and cultivation on a few islands.
This is an important staging area for many waterbirds (more than 20,000 waterbirds in total), although recent numbers are lower than in 1983, with the exception of
Mergus serrator which has increased. Fluctuations may largely be the result of variability in winter harshness. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including
Botaurus stellaris, Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. paradisaea and
S. albifrons.
