Swidwie Site

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2010 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Spotted Crake Porzana porzana LC breeding (1995–2003) 6–35 males C6
Little Crake Zapornia parva LC breeding (1990–1998) 50–60 males C6
Common Crane Grus grus LC passage (2009) 1,500 birds C2
Black Tern Chlidonias niger LC breeding (1998) 80 pairs C6
Bluethroat Luscinia svecica LC breeding (1995–2003) 6–28 pairs C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2010. The most recent assessment (2008) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2008 not assessed very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset medium

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) very high
Pollution happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Biological resource use happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
No known threats happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Not assessed No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
