Site location and context
The IBA represents the most prominent limestone massif in Eastern Serbia. It stretches in NW-SE direction for 35 km and is situated some 20 km southeast from the city of Niš. The entire are is poorly inhabited and difficult to access, with very few roads leading into the mountain. Suva Planina is very diverse in habitats, ranging from sub-Mediterranean oak forests in the foothills of the mountain to beech and fir forests and subalpine pastures on the top (Trem 1.808 m in altitude). The central part of the IBA is a karst plateau with numerous pits, potholes and other types of karst relief.
