Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
An open, diverse landscape near Mattersburg. The main land-use is low-intensity agriculture and the site consists of arable fields, orchards, grassland and groves dominated by
Castanea sativa.
This site holds important numbers of birds associated with non-intensively managed orchards and open woodland.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Threats include the abandonment of orchards,
Castanea groves and hay-meadows, and the removal of old trees, nesting sites for
Otus scops.
Castanea stands are also threatened by a virus (`Other' threats). A two-year conservation project (1994-1995) has been completed, resulting in detailed management proposals.
