Site description (1994 baseline):
Site location and context
Large agricultural fields irrigated by rotary gantries on the Batinah coast.
See box for key species. Large numbers of birds are attracted to the water, greenery and spilt grain during migration and winter; at least 149 species occur. Other notable species wintering or dispersing after the breeding season include
Melanocorypha bimaculata (200, February),
Calandrella brachydactyla (500, January) and
Emberiza striolata (60, December). Notable species on passage or during the post-breeding season include
Falco amurensis (133, April–May),
Pterocles exustus (1,000, August),
Coracias benghalensis (500, November),
Merops superciliosus (400, August) and
Anthus campestris (100, November).
