Subotica lakes and sandy terrain

Site location and context
The area is situated in the far north of North Bačka area within the municipality of Subotica, along the border with Hungary. It represents a unique complex of sand, steppe, forest-steppe, salt marsh and aquatic habitats. Some of the main landscape features are Subotička peščara (Subotica Sands) which stretches over 2.500 ha, with sand dunes reaching up to 140 m in altitude, Palić and Ludaš lakes, which has loess banks with relict steppe vegetation and vast reeds, which cover about 35% of the lake surface. The fishpond Kapetanski rit and surrounding salt marshes are also vital areas for numerous bird species.
