Site summary
Strážovské vrchy is a forested upland area of the geographical units: Strážovské vrchy and Súľovské vrchy. Prevailing habitat is limestone beech forest, with fir-beech and maple-beech mountain communities at higher altitudes. The area is used primarily for forestry, hunting, quarrying, tourism, and on a smaller scale sheep and cattle grazing. It is an important site for upland-forest, rocky habitat, and mountain meadow species. The most significant population of Peregrine Falcons in Slovakia nest in this area. Major threats to birds include intensive forest management and disturbance. The site is proposed as an SPA.
