RO099
Stepa Casimcea This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2007 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Eurasian Thick-knee Burhinus oedicnemus LC breeding (1990–2006) 45–50 pairs C6
Short-toed Snake-eagle Circaetus gallicus LC breeding (1990–2006) 9–10 pairs C6
Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus NT passage (1990–2006) 60–70 birds C1, C6
Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus LC winter (1990–2006) 90–100 birds C6
Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus LC breeding (1990–2006) 20–24 pairs C6
European Roller Coracias garrulus LC breeding (1990–2006) 60–70 pairs C1
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus VU breeding (1990–2006) 29–36 pairs C1, C6
Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus VU passage (1990–2006) 200–300 birds C1
Saker Falcon Falco cherrug EN breeding (1990–2006) 1–2 pairs C1, C6
Lesser Grey Shrike Lanius minor LC breeding (1990–2006) 210–240 pairs C6
Calandra Lark Melanocorypha calandra LC breeding (1990–2006) 2,200–2,500 pairs C6
Greater Short-toed Lark Calandrella brachydactyla LC breeding (1990–2006) 600–700 pairs C6
Tawny Pipit Anthus campestris LC breeding (1990–2006) 3,600–5,000 pairs C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2007. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Saker Falcon Falco cherrug 0 / 2 (pairs) 0 very poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor
Artificial/Terrestrial good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Energy production and mining happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Biological resource use likely in long term (>4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Very little or no conservation action taking place low
