Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
The IBA encompasses a group of largely uninhabited islands and surrounding shallow waters. The vegetation on the islands includes saltmarshes, heathland and various grassland types, with some cultivation on a few islands. The sea area surrounding the islands is regarded as a scientific reference area as it is almost unaffected by nutrient pollution.
The site supports a large colony of
Phalacrocorax carbo and high numbers of wintering
Somateria mollissima.
Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. paradisaea and
S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Access to the islands is prohibited. High-speed ferries pose a threat (classified as `Other' and `Disturbance to birds').
National High
International Low580 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Stavns Fjord, 15,450 ha). 580 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Stavns Fjord and adjacent waters, 16,320 ha).
